In 2007, President Nazarbayev’s son-in-law, Timur Kulibayev, celebrated his 41st birthday in grand style. At a small venue in Almaty, he hosted a private concert with some of Russia’s biggest pop-stars. The headliner, however, was Elton John, to whom he reportedly paid one million pounds for this one-time appearance.

Defense Minister Akhmetov, a self-proclaimed workaholic, appears to enjoy loosening up in the tried and true “homo sovieticus” style — i.e., drinking  oneself into a stupor.

HANS HOGERVORST (AFM): Nederlandse politici nog steeds redelijk gevoelig voor bankenlobby

Voorzitter Hans Hoogervorst van de Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM) heeft maandag scherpe kritiek geuit op politici om hun trage aanpak van tophypotheken.

‘Twee jaar geleden heeft de AFM zijn eerste voorstel ingediend, en er is nog niets gebeurd’, aldus Hoogervorst in een gesprek met radiozender BNR. ‘Het is nu al twee jaar mopperen over een eenvoudige zaak.’

Hoogervorst is vooral kwaad over het feit dat de Nederlandse banken toch weer de gelegenheid krijgen een tegenvoorstel in te dienen. ‘Nederlandse politici tonen zich nog steeds gevoelig voor de bankenlobby.’

Ministerraad

 In de ministerraad ligt al een voorstel van de AFM om de verstrekking van tophypotheken aan banden te leggen. Bij tophypotheken ligt het verstrekte hypotheekbedrag over het algemeen hoger dan 90% van de executiewaarde van een woning.

 In het voorstel mag een tophypotheek alleen onder strenge voorwaarden worden verstrekt. Hoogervorst: ‘En nu krijgt de Nederlandse Vereniging van banken toch weer de gelegenheid een ander voorstel in te dienen. Dat gaat natuurlijk weer maanden duren.’
